When Graduation Gets Real<\/strong><\/h3>\n

This morning, a few of my HR students stopped by after class with worried faces.
They\u2019re in their final semester and beginning to prepare for their 14-week co-op training \u2014 the last requirement before graduation.<\/p>\n

Their questions came quickly and sincerely:<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cSir, what should I write in my professional summary?\u201d
\u201cShould I include my one-year work experience?\u201d
\u201cCan I mention class projects or presentations?\u201d
\u201cWhich courses should I highlight?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I smiled because I\u2019ve heard these same questions every semester \u2014 and they always remind me how important this moment is. The resume isn\u2019t just a document; it\u2019s a bridge between the classroom and the professional world.<\/p>\n

\n

Your Resume Is a Story, Not a List<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Most students start by listing everything they\u2019ve done. But employers don\u2019t read resumes like checklists; they read them like short stories \u2014 looking for evidence of potential, not perfection.<\/p>\n

So I tell my students:<\/p>\n

\u201cYour resume should tell the story of who you\u2019re becoming.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A good CV doesn\u2019t need to show years of experience; it needs to show growth, effort, and direction.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What to Include \u2014 and Why<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Here\u2019s how I guide them, step by step:<\/p>\n

    Professional Summary \u2014 Your 3-Line Identity<\/strong>
    Write three lines that show who you are, what you\u2019ve studied, and what kind of contribution you want to make.
    Example:<\/em><\/p>\n

    \u201cAn HR student specializing in talent management and cross-cultural teamwork. Passionate about applying classroom learning to real HR challenges during co-op training.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    Education \u2014 Your Academic Foundation<\/strong>
    Highlight your Bachelor\u2019s in HRM<\/em> (or BSBM HR) clearly.
    Mention 2\u20133 key courses<\/em> related to the co-op position \u2014 for example:
    Performance Management<\/em>, Recruitment & Selection<\/em>, Cross-Cultural Management.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  3. \n

    Experience \u2014 Show Learning, Not Length<\/strong>
    If you\u2019ve worked for one or two years, absolutely include it \u2014 but focus on skills and impact<\/strong>, not job titles.
    Example:<\/em> \u201cAssisted HR team in updating employee attendance policy to improve punctuality.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  4. \n

    Projects & Presentations \u2014 Proof of Application<\/strong>
    Mention academic projects that show applied HR learning.
    If you\u2019ve delivered a strong presentation, include it under \u201cAcademic Projects.\u201d
    Employers value initiative and communication skills.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  5. \n

    Skills \u2014 Your Tools<\/strong>
    Combine technical and soft skills.
    Example:<\/em> MS Excel \u00b7 HRIS Basics \u00b7 Teamwork \u00b7 Cross-Cultural Communication \u00b7 Report Writing.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Why Employers Care About More Than Grades<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    In Saudi Arabia, co-op supervisors tell me one thing consistently:<\/p>\n

    \u201cWe can train technical skills, but we value attitude and curiosity most.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    That\u2019s what your resume should communicate \u2014 not just what you\u2019ve studied, but how ready you are to learn.<\/em><\/p>\n

    So instead of writing \u201cLooking for an opportunity to gain experience,\u201d<\/em> write:<\/p>\n

    \n

    \u201cEager to apply classroom learning and contribute to HR operations with professionalism and adaptability.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    It\u2019s a small shift, but it changes everything.<\/p>\n

    A Story from My Own Classroom<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Last semester, one student had an excellent GPA but always stayed quiet in class. When it came time to apply for co-op, he said, \u201cSir, I don\u2019t think I have anything to show.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Together, we reviewed his projects \u2014 and discovered that he had built an entire training module for Employee Motivation<\/em> in one of his courses. We added it to his CV.<\/p>\n

    Two months later, he wrote to me:<\/p>\n

    \u201cSir, they selected me because of that project. They said it showed initiative.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

    That\u2019s what a good resume does \u2014 it highlights who you really are when you try your best.<\/em><\/p>\n

    Your resume isn\u2019t a mirror of the past \u2014 it\u2019s a window into your potential.<\/em>
    Don\u2019t hide behind modesty or fill it with jargon.
    Instead, let it reflect your effort, energy, and enthusiasm to learn.<\/strong><\/p>\n

    This week, as you prepare your co-op CVs, ask yourself:<\/p>\n

    Because every career begins not with a job offer, but with clarity about your own value.<\/em><\/p>\n
